It is true that only God knows, however, the Gemorah has plenty of places where it tells us why things (might) happen. They are at best indications of what might have been.
I think that we need to constantly remember the words of the ספר העיקרים by R’ Yosef Albo when he famously wrote:
אילו ידעתיו הייתיו If I knew Him, I’d be Him.
