Got in Himmel!

I've enjoyed being a computer science professor in Melbourne, Australia, as well as band leader/singer for the Schnapps Band over many years. My high schooling was in Chabad and I continued at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh in Israel and later in life at Machon L'Hora'ah, Yeshivas Halichos Olam.

  1. Big deal, in Chelm back in the old days, they used to buy a young Madchen when she was three or four years old, she would be bought on Kontrakt to be married when she turned 12, this was happening in the shtetls of Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Russian and Eastern Hungary right up until the 1890’s in some places right up until the First World War.

  2. From vice.com

“In the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, tradition is king. Polo’s still played with a freshly killed goat and the men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that’s made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping.”

“Arranged” marriage, we do the same now?

      1. So please tell me the differences compared to an arranged marriage where the couple meet for 15 minutes and the next time is under the chuppah?

In the abduction, the male is at least attracted to the female and they too probably have similar backgrounds and philosophies etc.

          1. I was obviously not saying they are the same. So besides the screaming hoarsemen, is there any difference? I don’t think a lot of Chareidim have a choice. What do they know at 17 after 15 minutes (or however long they are given)? You think they are going to say no? It would be interesting to know what percentage say no. So no, I don’t think many of them have a choice.

            1. Please get your facts right, firstly, Chassidische couples meet for 7 minutes not 15 and secondly: Ven a buchar oder a moidel is geboyren gevorn es iz bashtelt in himmel di nomen fin dos bashert. Azoy, dont question Hashems business.
