4’25” – “Intellectually it was a no-brainer.” I am sorry, but t was a no-brainer 20-30 years ago also and all those say it was different then are looking for excuses for their bad decisions and cover-ups.

It’s not the case that psychologists or psychiatrists have the same understanding about the nature of the problem that they do 20 years later. There definitely were those who thought that one could be ‘treated’ and wouldn’t re-offend. We all now sadly know better. It’s is rare almost unheard of that a perpetrator had only one victim. Some used to see it as a once off that if treated could be ‘nipped in the bud’. There was also a school of thought that homosexuals could be rewired if they married women. Some seemed to, but they batted for both sides!

If David Kramer had been prosecuted 20 years ago he would very likely have received a fine and a good behavior bond. One of the ironies of this case is that his punishment ended up being far more severe because he was sentenced at a time when his actions were taken more seriously.

Rabbi Smason did exactly the right thing and many thanks to him. I meant to say that had someone carefully considered the options, even 30 years, they should have done what Rabbi Smason did. Even according to those that thought the rapist would not reoffend, they should have realized a serious crime was committed and the police should have been contacted. Had the Rabbi’s wives been beaten up or raped I am sure they would have called the police 30 years ago.

True, but unless it was rape, they undoubtedly looked at fondling, perhaps from the outside, as a minor offence that wouldn’t have long term implications for a minor and the offender wouldn’t repeat it. Especially in the case if someone frum they would have assumed a temporary aberration. I’m not here to defend, rather to paint a possible mind set.
