Acknowledging Hashem on Yom Ha’atzmaut in Melbourne

I've enjoyed being a computer science professor in Melbourne, Australia, as well as band leader/singer for the Schnapps Band over many years. My high schooling was in Chabad and I continued at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh in Israel and later in life at Machon L'Hora'ah, Yeshivas Halichos Olam.

  1. I still have in my possession a booklet of the additional tefilot for Yom HaAtzma’ut, reprinted by Bnei Akiva from one issued at the time by Israel’s Ministry of Religious Affairs (Misrad HaDatot), and it contains all of the additions (the various pesukim, the adaptation from Lecha Dodi, etc.). This slim booklet dates from Israel’s 25th anniversary. The same, or very similar, insertions appear in the Rinat Yisrael and the Koren siddurim.
I believe that these additions were actually added by the Rabbanut Harashit (who also instituted Hallel etc. for Yom Yerushalayim), and not, as you suggest, solely on the basis of the Mahzor for Yom HaAtzma’ut of Hakibbutz Hadati.
I would add a further note: over the years, through Facebook, I have seen photos of the tefilot for Yom HaAtzma’ut at Mizrachi, and I noted with sadness (as you have) that the turnout was thinner than in the years prior to my Aliya to Israel. I compare that with attendance at Mincha on Tisha B’Av one time a few years ago, at which the Mizrachi shule was full. Are Melbourne Jews more concerned with commemorating the Churban of the Beit Hamikdash than acknowledging the miracles of Hashem in leading us toward the Binyan Beit Olamim?

    1. I think you are right Perry. My memory was diverted by the elaborate booklet created during the Rabbi Sprung years.

As to why there may be less people: that was partly the point I was making. The COSV appears to be functionally moribund and I don’t see their constituents asking questions of their Rabbis. Given the preponderance of Habad leaning Rabbis those Rabbis (who no longer even had an RCV sponsorship to cajole them into attendance) would hardly have encouraged their membership to attend what has now morphed from a Community service to a Mizrachi service. Yes, Tisha B’Av would be announced etc in those Shules but I suspect that the most that will happen is a “special Kiddush” that some may hold on the following Shabbos. I expect that Yom Yerushalayim will too cease to be a communal service. I hope not!
